So often we neglect sound in everyday experiences, as we are so overwhelmed with visual content. The contemporary art medium of sound art or music concréte focuses on experiencing our surroundings through sounds, noises and voices, dissociating them from the visual.
My first project was to take field recordings of an area in Fairy Meadow and create a sound piece/documentation with it. I took inspiration from sound artist Gail Priest and tried to manipulate the sounds I found beyond easy recognition, while still trying to maintain some familiarity in other sounds. I also tried to capture what it’s like to be in an unfamiliar place by alienating the sounds to create a feeling of confusion and discomfort.
